COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Young Journalists Association has requested the UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet to study Sri Lanka's proposed data protection law.

The Sri Lanka Young Journalists Association has raised concerns over the Personal Data Protection Bill that was tabled in Parliament last month.

In a letter to UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet, they said the bill compromises the rights of journalists and limits the enjoyment of the right to information.

They said it also grants power to conduct inquiries and issues punishments by an institution that is not a court of law.

The request to the UN human rights chief comes days ahead of the UN Human Rights Council sessions that are to begin on the 28th of this month.
