Horana residents take to streets opposing failure of authorities to refurbish road

COLOMBO (News 1st); Residents of the Kumbuka area in Horana took to the streets on Sunday (09) opposing the failure of authorities to refurbish a road in the area.

The movement of vehicles along the main road from Horana to Colombo was affected for about two hours due to the protest.

The Kumbuka - Batuwita road in Horana is located a few kilometers from the Kahathuduwa entry point to the Southern Expressway, and the protestors blocked the Colombo - Horana main road in Kumbuka.

A resident of the area, speaking to News 1st stated that although it has been two years since the Government installed a board claiming that the road will be refurbished, no action has been taken as of yet.

They said that vehicles cannot visit the area to take their children to school, and they are also unable to use a three-wheel to transport sick patients.

Another resident, speaking to News 1st, stated that they will take to the streets on Monday (10) as well, as the rulers have not listened to their problems.

The News 1st correspondent reported that the movement of vehicles was affected for about two hours, while Police officers from Horana and Moragahathena were brought in to bring the situation under control.

The Horana Pradeshiya Sabha chairman arrived at the location with the intervention of the police.

Asoka Ranatunga, the Chairman of the Horana Pradeshiya sabha assured that a meeting with the road engineer, water board engineer, and the NCC company involved in the project will be held at 09:30 on Thursday (13), and afterward, funds can be allocated for that matter.

The Chairman assured that funds have already been reserved for the relevant purpose.
