Fisheries Minister promises legal action preventing entry of Indian fishermen

COLOMBO (News 1st);  Fishermen in Jaffna staged a protest on Friday (24) opposing the illegal entry of Indian fishermen into Sri Lankan waters.

The protest was organized by the Jaffna Fisheries Cooperative Union, and the fishermen involved in the protest marched to the Jaffna District Secretariat, who subsequently staged a protest opposite the District Secretariat.

The movement of vehicles along the A9 road was affected due to the protest.

Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda also visited the area.

The Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda, speaking at the scene stated that he spoke to Indian Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister of India, S. Jaishankar over the phone.

Speaking further, the Minister stated that the central Government has appointed a State Minister to intervene and resolve this issue, yet a solution hasn't been provided to this problem.

Promising to discuss the matter with the President and Prime Minister as well, the Minister pointed out that Indian fishermen are also being arrested, to which the Lankan authorities will take legal action to prevent the entry of Indian fishermen.
