COLOMBO (News 1st): SLPP Parliamentarian Sanjeewa Edirimanne says that when carrying out any renovation work related to an ancient irrigation system, the main focus should be on its historical value, the technology used in ancient times and the environmental conditions.

According to the MP, the project to construct a jogging track along the breakwater of the Parakrama Samudra has been suspended due to public outcry.

“There were many opinions about the project, from an engineering perspective and a traditional perspective about constructing a jogging track near the Parakrama Samudhraya. So we took the most prudent decision, which was to suspend the project out of respect for public opinion. At present, the project has been suspended.,” he said.

He further added that caution should be exercised in any reconstruction of a historical site and that personal opinion should not be taken into account in such matters.

“You have to be careful when you decided on such delicate matters. At such a time there is no such thing as a personal opinion. We have to respect the history and engineers,” he pointed out.
