Colombo (News 1st) –  NDF Presidential Candidate Sajith Premadasa has delivered a clear and emphatic statement on the agreement with Millenium Challenge Corporation.

In a letter to Ven. Ududumbara Kashapa Thero, who launched a fast against the agreement, Premadasa states that the Government will not sign any agreement with the MCC until the 16th of November. Premadasa adds that if such an agreement is to be signed, it would be after debating the matter extensively both inside and outside parliament.

Minister Sajith Premadasa reiterates in this letter that he would not allow the country to enter into any agreements which would be detrimental to Sri Lanka. The thero called off his fast after receiving this assurance from Minister Premadasa.

SLPP Presidential Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa also wrote a letter to the thero.  In his letter, Rajapaksa states that he would take steps to review all agreements signed by the Government during the period between the declaring of elections and the release of the final results.  Rajapaksa adds that any such agreement would be reviewed keeping national security and national needs in mind and continues to state that he would take steps to cancel them if they are not in the interest of the nation. However, the SLPP presidential candidate fails to categorically state which agreements he speaks of and the letter also has no mention of the controversial MCC agreement.

When questions were raised regarding the fate of the MCC from SLPP politicians during events held today, MP Bandula Gunawardene stated that the MCC agreement would be terminated under their Government.

Co-media spokesperson for Gotabaya Rajapaksa, MP Dullas Allahaperuma, however, played coy with the question regarding the fate of the MCC. While avoiding the question, Allahaperuma stated that MP Gunawardene had already provided an answer.
