"MP Welgama will not be fielded as the SLFP candidate" - General Secretary of SLFP, Dayasiri Jayasekara

Colombo (News 1st) - MP Kumara Welgama stated that his name has not been proposed as the candidate of the SLFP. He highlighted that in order to protect the SLFP and on behalf of the country, a candidate must come forward from the SLFP. "If my name is proposed, I will contest the presidential election. I am capable of going forward", he continued. He added that he has discussed the matter with the president. He emphasized that they would not agree if the party decides to join the SLPP. "I explained to him clearly" the MP stated in reference to the President, that they would be compelled to take alternative measures if such a decision is taken. The MP questioned the eligibility of the SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa to contest the Presidential Election as it is sceptical whether he has fulfilled all the necessary conditions to run for presidency noting that the US government is yet to respond to regarding the matter. Prior to convening this media briefing, MP Welgama held discussions with the Movement to protect the SLFP. Meanwhile, the General Secretary of SLFP, Dayasiri Jayasekara affirmed that MP Welgama will not be fielded as the presidential candidate of the SLFP. "He worked and nourished the SLPP, and served as the SLPP district leader for the Badulla district. After being interdicted from this position, he re-joined the SLFP. When he joined the SLFP, we warmly welcomed him", he added. He further highlighted that there is no way he could contest on behalf of SLFP. He added that MP Welgama has certain opposing views against Gotabaya Rajapaksa noting that he worships Mahinda Rajapaksa. "I don't understand how he goes against Gotabaya Rajapaksa while worshipping and supporting Mahinda Rajapaksa. I really don't understand this", he continued.
