Colombo (News 1st): The Department of Forest Conservation has decided to expedite the removal of the Pine plantations. Conservator General of Forests W.A.C. Weragoa noted that Pine plantations have had a major impact on the country's ecosystem and pointed out that these plantations have caused the soil to become barren. According to the forest conservation department, there are over 16,000 hectares of pine plantations at present. The plantations which were established in the 80's has also caused a threat to the natural springs of the central hills. The Conservator General of Forests noted that they have been able to remove around 1000 hectares of pine plantations. He added that according to the plan currently being executed, pine plantations are being replaced by local trees.
