Colombo (News 1st): President Maithripala Sirisena presided over the closing ceremony of the "Rata Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu" or "Unite for the country" program today (June 8). The event was held at the Mullaitivu Pradeshiya Sabha Grounds. The 4th phase of the "Rata Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu" program began in the Mullaitivu district on the 3rd of this month. The 1178 separate projects were conducted in 16 Grama Niladhari divisions across Divisional Secretariat zones. The project cost Rs. 52 million. The President awarded land deeds and Samurdhi beneficiary schemes to the residents of the area. Speaking at the event President Maithripala Sirisena said;
"Why was this program under the theme "Unite for the country" introduced? Because we are not united for this country. If the country is to be united who should lead us? The Maha Sangha should take the leadership to unite the entire country keeping aside all differences. The Hindu and Islam religious leaders, as well as Catholic priests, should be united. You must forgive me for saying this but they too are divided. So how can the country live together? I'm not speaking in hope of securing votes. I'm speaking for the country to stand united. But when we call for unity in the country there are those who would not stand with us. There is going to be an election at the end of this year. Many people are conducting themselves today targetting the elections. Extremism, terrorism, bombs being detonated to divide and destroy the country. Their ambitions have been successful in Sri Lanka today. Why is that? The politicians of this country are dividing and separating the people of the country based on race and religion. This is destroying this country. Do not allow for a Muslim Prabakaran to be born."
