Colombo (News1st): Locals of Aruwakkalu, Puttalam carried out a protest against a proposed garbage disposal site in the area today (September 09).
Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka made an observation tour to the proposed garbage disposal site this morning but the media was not invited to cover the event.
The Aruwakkalu landfill project was launched on the 01st of February 2018 with the November 2019 deadline. The estimated value of the project is US $101 million and the construction work is being done through the China Habour Engineering Company.
Meanwhile, locals who came to the area expressed their views against the project. Protesters of Karathiu and Therakkuliya areas entered the construction site and also caused damages to its properties.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka expressing his views about the protest at a meeting in Wanathavilluwa reassured that public that the project will not cause groundwater contamination. He added that garbage will be brought here after being compressed in Kelaniya, so the water in the garbage would be reduced by 80%.
Minister Ranawaka said they will use the site to properly dispose of electronic waste adding that the project should not be abandoned just because there are several issues.
