Speaker to appoint committee to decide on PC polls

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has taken steps to appoint a five-member committee headed by the Prime Minister in order to provide recommendations on holding provincial council elections.

The five-member committee is to be selected by the speaker over the course of the next few days. The speaker’s office announced that the other members appointed, apart from the prime minister, would be intellectuals who are knowledgeable in the field and not politicians.

The Delimitation Committee Report on Provincial Councils was defeated in Parliament yesterday (August 24).

The report received 139 votes against it and none in favour.
