8.20 PM – Police personnel and the Police Special Task Force have been deployed to the Fort Railway Station.
Our correspondents based in the area say the protest is continuing opposite the Fort Railway Station. In addition, heavy traffic is reported in the road surrounding the Fort Railway Station and Police have requested commuters to use alternative routes.
COLOMBO (News 1st) – In response to the strike action launched by several Railway Trade Unions including drivers and guards today (August 08) the passengers have also launched a protest opposite the fort railway station against the sudden railway trade union strike.
News 1st Correspondents in the area stated that a tense situation could be seen in the area due to the protestors. Our cameras captured scened of angry commuters attacking several trade union representatives.
The Secretary of the Railway Operators Trade Union, P. M. P. Peiris speaking to News 1st stated that they forced to launch a strike because Ministers Sarath Amunugama and Rajitha Senaratne failed to deliver on promises granted during earlier discussions to resolve salary anomalies. It was stated that the trains functioning currently will reach their destinations but the trains that are scheduled to depart from Fort and Maradana has been halted.
The Ministry of Transport states Railway commuters’ season tickets will be valid to travel in Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses due to the prevailing strike.
More SLTB buses towards areas in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara have been launched for the convenience of the public, P. H. R. P. Chandrasiri, Deputy General Manager of SLTB stated to News 1st.
