727 complaints against the Police in 6 months

Colombo (News1st) : Over the past 6 months, the National Police Commission has received 727 complaints by the public against members of the police force. A majority of these complaints have been lodged from the Western province. Director of the Commission's public complaints unit, Lakshman Wijeytunge noted that the number of complaints that they are receiving on the inefficiency of the police force is on the rise. He added that the commission has also received complaints regarding the police acting in a biased manner, illegal arrests and complaints regarding bribery and corruption. Wijeyatunge noted that initial investigations into 40 such complaints are currently underway. He urged the general public to call the National Police Commission through the hotline 1960 to lodge any complaints they have regarding the Police. Chairman of the National Police Commission P.H. Manatunge noted that they are currently devising a method to address the complaints they receive in a speedy and effective manner.
