Devotees flock to Polonnaruwa for Poson Poya

Colombo (News1st) - Poson full-moon poya day which celebrates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka was marked on Wednesday (May 27th). Poson commemorates the occasion over 2,000 years ago when Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism. Several programmes were held at the Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya throughout the day today to mark the day. The exposition of the sacred relics of the Mihindu Maharath Thero at the Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya was held on Wednesday and is set to conclude on Thursday. The Mihindu Maha Perahera paraded the streets of the Mihintale sacred grounds last night to celebrate Poson. Chief Incumbent of the Mihintale Rajamaha Vihara, Ven. Walawahengunawewe Dhammarathana Thera says all facilities are in place for devotees arriving at the Mihintale Sacred Grounds. A water purifier was declared open at the Ruwanweli Seya for devotees under the Gammadda initiative inline with Poson Poya.
