Matara Shootout: Final rites of the Police Constable to be held on Sunday

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Acting Inspector General of Police C.T.Wickremeratne paid his last respects to Police Constable W.G.G.N Weerasinghe who was killed in a shootout yesterday with armed gunmen who stormed a jewelry store in Matara. The mortal remains of the late 35 years old Police Constable who was a father of two, have been placed at his residence in Godagama, Matara. He had joined Sri Lanka Police in 2007 and was attached to the Police Special Task Force in 2008. Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera said Weerasinghe had rejoined Sri Lanka Police in 2017 and was serving at the Matara Police since then. CCTV footage had captured this unarmed Police Officer risking his life to apprehend an armed suspect during yesterday's (June 22) gun battle. Our correspondent reported the Late Constable Weerasinghe was the second in a family of five and his three brothers were serving in the Military. The final rites are to be performed on Sunday (June 24), and he was posthumously promoted to the Rank of Police Sergeant yesterday.
