Water Supply Joint Trade Union to continue strike

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Water Supply Joint Trade Union Alliance says that they are to continue their Trade union action which was launched based on salary discrepancies. According to its Convener, Upali Ratnayake, the strike action will be carried out until a proper solution is to be meted out to them. As a result of this trade union action, disruptions to water supply has been reported from several parts of the island. When News1st contacted the Ministry of Water Supply and Town Planning, its secretary M.V. Hapuarachchi said that a 20% salary increment has been in effect since the beginning of January this year and that the Ministry is not in a position to impose a 25% salary increment. Meanwhile, the Postal and Telecommunication Officers' Union says that they will engage in a trade union action from midnight tonight. According to its chief secretary, H.K.Kariyawasam the strike will be launched citing several demands including the failure to permanently place post-masters. Moreover, the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineering Association says that they will engage in a work to rule trade union action in protest of the failure to implement the Long-term power generating plan. Its Chairman, Saumya Kumarawadu said that a final decision is to be met this Tuesday (June 05).
