COLOMBO (News 1st) – Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 92nd birthday today (April 21st), her 66th birthday since she ascended the throne in 1952.

President Maithripala Sirisena will be among the world leaders who will be attending the celebration at the Royal Albert Hall. Queen Elizabeth II is both the longest-serving and oldest British monarch ever, breaking the records set by Queen Victoria, her great-great-grandmother.

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on April 21, 1926, and dedicated her services during the Second World War and married Prince Philip in 1947. She ascended the throne in 1952 and since then has been the Head of the Commonwealth and the UK.

She is the mother of Charles – Prince of Wales, Prince Edward – Earl of Wessex, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew – Duke of York. During her 66 year reign on the throne, the Queen had visited Sri Lanka twice, in 1954 and 1981.
