COLOMBO (News 1st) -The Central Cultural Fund is planning to build a cable car service that would allow visitors to have an aerial view of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The Director-General of the Central Cultural Fund, Professor Prishantha Gunewardhane stated, this project will be implemented with the assistance of Chinese experts. The Chinese experts who are undertaking the project will arrive in Sri Lanka to assess the project, he added. According to Professor Prishantha Gunewardhane, this decision was taken considering many requests received from tourists who are unable to climb Sigiriya. The cable car project for Sigiriya Rock Fortress was first proposed in the year 2002, however, it was never implemented due to objections from environmentalists. Sigiriya was listed as a UNESCO heritage site in the year 1982. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is 180m in height and is visited by thousands of tourists both local and foreign every year.
