A strike action by nurses has brought surgeries at the Sri Jayawardanepura hospital to a standstill.

According to the Hospital Director, the number of surgeries performed daily in the hospital is between 50 and 60.

In addition, 25 cardiac patients who were admitted at the Colombo National Hospital were transferred to the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital due to maintenance of the surgical unit.

Director General of the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, Dr. Susith Senaratne, stated that all these surgeries have been halted.

Meanwhile, the Public Service United Nurses Union states that they will continue their strike.

They began their protest on January 3, against the newly introduced fingerprint system.
