Meteorology Dept forecasts heavy rains in several regions

The Department of Meteorology forecasts heavy rainfall expected in the Uva, Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces as well as in certain parts of the Eastern Province, caused by a low level atmospheric disturbance over the vicinity of Sri Lanka.

Around fifteen houses in Nawangoda, Nuwara Eliya were flooded by heavy rains experienced since the night of Monday, January 29.

Vehicular movement in the 1st mile post area on the Nuwara Eliya, Udapussellawa Main Road was hampered due to floods.

Twenty five houses and farmlands in the Herathpura and Meddawatte villages in the Ragala area were flooded.

Meanwhile, according to our correspondents, the Ampara, Lahugala and Pottuvil areas which were experiencing a severe drought over the past few months, have been receiving heavy rains since last night as well.

Several areas in the Monaragala District were also reported on receiving heavy rains. The Dombagahawala, Mariarawa main road was flooded by the overflowing Seda Oya.

A school teacher in the area was caught in the Seda Oya currents while returning home after school and was rescued by a local youth.

Our correspondent stated that movement on the Ethimale – Siyambalanduwa main road was flooded caused by the overflowing waters of  Kadin Ara and Kuda Oya.
