Rehearsals commence to mark National Independence Day – Prince Edward Chief Guest

Rehearsals for the 70th National Independence Day will begin today.Police said the rehearsals will be held today, tomorrow and from January 31 to February 3, in the area surrounding Galle Face Green.

According to the special traffic plan that will be in effect from today, the Galle road will be closed from the Kollupitiya junction to N.S.A Roundabout during the hours between 6 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Police requests motorists to use alternative routes.

The Ministry of Home Affairs informs the public to hoist the National flag from February 1 to February 7 at all offices, residences and business institutions in commemoration of the 70th National Independence day.

Minister of Home Affairs, Vajira Abeywardena, said the 70th Independence Day celebrations will be held on February 4, at Galle Face Green with the participation of President Maithripala Sirisena and the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth representing the British royal family, will grace the ceremony as a special guest.

The theme of this year’s Independence celebrations is “One Nation”, and a special symbol has been designed for the 70th Independence celebrations.

A commemorative stamp will also be issued on the Independence Day.
