Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressed the Nation today (January 18). This address was on the Report of the Bond Commission and the Current Political Situation of the Country.
The PM says the money which was lost will be recovered. He says he will support the recommendations made by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry.
Let’s stop there. – It appears, he accepts that a scam did take place.
The Presidential Commission was appointed as there was continuous media outcry about the bond issue.
Mind you, it was the media that exposed this back in March 2015 – mere days after the first bond issue took place.
One person who has been named in this report, not once but few times, is the Prime Minister.
In his statement, the Prime Minister says that this investigation was not swept under the carpet.
As a matter of fact, it was under the carpet -until the Media in this country exposed it.
Once it was exposed, the Prime Minister appointed the Pitipana Committee. Then the Prime Minister said he appointed it because he wanted a clarification on the matter first.
As outcry from the media and public continued, COPE of the 07th Parliament Chaired by DEW Gunasekera investigated the matter.
Before the report came out, Sujeewa Senasinghe went to court and sought an order preventing the release of that report.
Days after Senasinghe went to court, Parliament was dissolved.
Thereafter, COPE of the 8th Parliament, this time chaired by Sunil Handunnetti, investigated the matter.
During the investigations, one member resigned from COPE and Sujeewa Senasinghe replaced him.
COPE Chairman continuously said, he was under pressure, and the pressure was such he walked out of COPE deliberations at one occasion.
Footnotes were added to the COPE report. -which means there were two opinions on the COPE report.
This was another attempt to sweep this under the carpet.
But now all the matters have been exposed from the Report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry.
Though the Prime Minister says it was not swept under the carpet, the above mentioned incidents are clear evidence that there were efforts, time and time again, to sweep this scam under the carpet.
