Two suspects, a driver and owner of a lorry, who were accused of bulldozing the stupa archaeologists dug up in Sudeikuda, Sampur, have been taken into custody .
They were arrested as a result of an investigation conducted by Muttur Assistant Police Superintendent Buddhika Manatunga and his team.
Police have also found the bulldozer in question and a lorry.
Police stated that the operator of the bulldozer met with an accident last Tuesday, December 26, in Chilaw and is currently in critical condition at the Colombo National Hospital.
The driver of the lorry used to transport and hide the bulldozer was also hospitalised at the Trincomalee hospital after he met with an accident.
It is learnt that he fell off his motorcycle in the Thoppur area in Muttur.
The driver of the bulldozer has not yet been found.
Meanwhile, the authorities have taken steps to conserve the area surrounding the Sudeikuda stupa.
