The Committee on Cost of Living has decided to impose controlled prices on eight essential food items.
These control prices will be in effect until April 2018 at all outlets -including super-markets.
What are the price controlled food items?
However, control prices have not been imposed on Samba rice and White Kekulu Rice. A control price for these two varieties will be introduced in the near future, said the Ministry.
All SATHOSA and other Super Market outlets have been informed of the new prices, said the committee.
In addition, the Consumer Affairs Authority has been instructed to take legal action against all traders who sell these food items above the control price.
Consumers can register complaints against traders who sell above the set prices.
