News 1st’s Gammadda Movement launched yet another initiative, this time to end a battle for drinking water in the village of Varuni, Jaffna.

As always, the project was funded and powered by the people, for the people.

The lack of clean drinking water battered the people of Varuni North for 30 long years. Their only way of accessing water was with water-ways which get active with rainfall.

When it doesn’t rain, the villagers’ water needs were met by a well, which contains water that is not suitable for drinking.

However, the drought which swept through the district has resulted in both these water sources drying up.

Gammadda to the rescue

We decided to take the initiative on July 1, 2017 and began to work towards bringing new hopes to these people of Varuni North.

Today, -November 26, 2017 – Those hopes finally became a reality.

The project was led by News 1st Journalist Christina Ratnam.

“When someone falls, there has to be someone who can lend them a hand to rise. We are like the hands that help people to rise again. by being strength to help you take our lives forward, we will always be with you. Our organisation is always with the people. The people of this country are with us. Politicians only help those whom they think are helpful to them.. but we are dedicated brighten the future of even the youngest child here.” – K.
