President appointed National Economic Council convenes for first the time

The National Economic Council appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena  convened for the first time today, Tuesday, September 12.The council’s aim is to strengthen Sri Lanka’s national economy.

The meeting was attended by;

  • Prime Minister – Ranil Wickremesinghe
  • Minister of Finance and Mass Media – Mangala Samaraweera
  • Minister of Special Assignments – Sarath Amunugama
  • Minister of Science, Technology and Research – Susil Premajayantha
  • Several Secretaries of Ministries

It is the National Economic Council’s responsibility to take decisions regarding Sri Lanka’s economy while giving priority for the local agriculture and industries, said the president while addressing the meeting.

The Head of State emphasised that it is the aim of the council to take steps expeditiously in order to strengthen the rural economy of Sri Lanka and overcome poverty.
