North Korea has become the talk all around the world recently given their continuous nuclear tests despite warnings from the United States, United Nations and so on.

And now…, Sri Lanka has fallen into the mix. But not in the good way.

According to reports from the Associated Press, Sri Lanka is among a number of countries which are violating the current sanctions. This has prompted the United States to call for a vote on new UN sanctions against North Korea.

According to AP reports, U.N. Experts say that North Korea illegally exported coal, iron and other commodities worth at least $270 million to China and other countries including India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka in the six-month period ending in early August in violation of U.N. sanctions.

A report released on Saturday (September 9) says that Kim Jong Un’s government continues to flout sanctions on commodities as well as an arms embargo and restrictions on shipping and financial activities. – say experts monitoring sanctions.

President Maithripala Sirisena is likely to face tough questions relating to this shocking revelation during his visit to New York for the UN General Assembly next week.

Relations between Sri Lanka and the UN were extremely difficult during the Rajapaksa regime. Violations of UN sanctions by this Government is likely to set back the good relationship that has developed during the last 2 years.
