New criteria set for those seeking admission to Prison Hospital

The Prison’s Department has taken steps to send a letter instructing prison officials that when admitting inmates to the Prison hospital, they must follow the orders of the Subject Minister.

A senior official at the Department said that Commissioner General of Prisons, Nishantha Dhanasinghe signed the letter this morning.The letter has been addressed to all Prison Directors and the Prison’s Hospital.

Minister of Prison Reforms, D. M. Swaminathan had instructed the Commissioner General of Prisons that in the future, when admitting an inmate to the Prisons hospital, the medical advice of three doctors need to be obtained.

Up to now, inmates were admitted to the Prison’s Hospital based on the advise of one medical doctor.

When admitting an inmate, the medical reports need to be submitted to the Ministry of Prison Reforms, and the final decision will be taken by the ministry, following further investigations.
