In the wake of the Meethotamulla tragedy, the government decided to halt garbage disposal activities at the site. In the search for temporary alternate disposal sites, the authorities did identify several locations but things did not exactly go according to how they planned.

Identified temporary locations for garbage disposal;

> Karadiyana
> Dompe
> Veyangoda
> Usvetikeiyawa
> Kotikawatte

A group at the Karadiyana garbage disposal center turned back several garbage trucks and protested against the decision. People of Veyangoda and even the people of Maligapitiya in Dompe followed suit against the disposal of garbage collected from Colombo.

However, Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa pointed out that Dompe is the only place in SL with a sanitary landfill.

“We received it through Korean funds. 90 tonnes of waste can be stored at this collection point for a span of 20 years. This plant has been constructed in a way in which the waste water does not connect to any land or water line. All of this water is purified and released. So no one has to worry about the Dompe area because this plant is functioning in a way which does not harm the environment.” he added.

Protests were also staged in Uswetikeiyawa, Wattala against the disposal of garbage at marshy lands in Muthurajawela.

With regard to Kotikawatte, the public were assured that the disposal of garbage at this site will not be allowed following a discussion at the Kotikawatte Nagarukkarama Viharaya.
