Sri Lankan authorities release 77 Indian fishermen

Illegal maritime fishing in Sri Lankan waters by Indian fishermen has been a constant concern for the government, with the issue taking centrestage over the recent past as well.

The latest on this situation – the Sri Lanka Navy says eight Indian fishermen who violated the maritime border have been handed over to the Indian Coast Guard in international waters, North of Kankesanthurai.

Last week, Sri Lankan authorities released seventy-seven Indian fishermen who were in Sri Lankan custody, in exchange for twelve Sri Lankan fishermen who were released by Indian authorities.
