University lecturers engaged in a token strike today, March 08.

The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations commenced the token strike alleging that their income has been slashed as a result of a circular that had been issued.

The token strike was held at all universities except several faculties of the Moratuwa University.

Voice of students:

“There were no lectures today. We came here to register for the subjects since we are in the first year”.

“They have issued notices about the exam dates. We do not know when they will hold lectures”.

“It’s better if they can provide a quick solution to this. We can recommence education activities”.

Chairman of the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri claimed that when the particular circular is applied into the university system, the salary of the university lecturers will be cut down by a considerable amount. He stated that satisfactory steps are not being taken in this regard and that is why trade union action was taken.

“We have received a response from the University Grants Commission, we will take this into consideration when deciding on the future course of action”, he added.

While the university lecturers are engaged in a token strike, the university students held a protest march against private universities. The protest was organised by the Inter University Students Federation.

The university students commenced the protest from four different locations and arrived in Colombo – Fort. One protest commenced from Wattala while another commenced opposite the University of Kelaniya.

Protests also commenced from opposite the Sri Jayawardenepura University as well as the Moratuwa University and convened opposite the Fort Railway Station.

Several roads leading to the city of Colombo were blocked owing to the protests, while vehicular movement around Colombo – Fort was hampered as well.

However, the protesting students dispersed after holding a meeting opposite the Fort Railway Station.
