Speaker Karu Jayasuriya says that the National Freedom Front (JNP) led by MP Wimal Weerawansa cannot be accepted as a political party in parliament.

The speaker said that the parliament can only legally accept a party which handed over nominations and was elected to parliament.

Meanwhile, parliament was adjourned for ten minutes due to the unruly behaviour of several Parliamentarians.

Backstory

MP Weerawansa has requested parliament to approve the breakaway party as a legitimate political party. However, his request is now being rejected on the basis that the members of this party had initially contested under the UPFA ticket.
