Minister of Justice,Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa said that the EU has imposed condition when granting the GSP+ concession and they have several condition that have been agreed upon, while some which have not been agreed upon.

WIJE“We were also asked to legalise homosexuality in the country. The Europeans asked us to include it in the clauses of fundamental rights of the constitution. We clearly told them that although they have a culture of indecency, Sri Lankans are not people with such mental illnesses”, said the Minister of Justice.

The newly-constructed building of the Tissamaharama District Court was declared open by the Minister of Justice, Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa today.

The UNP says that the GSP+ concession will benefit the whole nation

UNP_GSPMP Harshana Rajakaruna at a media briefing convened at the Government Information Department said that the government has been working to regain the concession and has reached a level where the EU will provide approval

UNP MP,Wijepala Hettiarachchi charged that no one in the Rajapaksa administration attempted to regain the GSP+ after it was lost in 2009.

“Ever since we lost the GSP Plus in 2009 , how many attempted to regain it ? Not even one single Minister of the Rajapaksa Administration, who claimed they went international, was able to come close to it. Can you tell me about a factory that provided at least 50 jobs during his tenure of 09 years ?” he said/

The EU, issuing a press release on January 18, 2017 says that it wishes to reiterate that the ratification and implementation of 27 international conventions signed by a succession of Sri Lankan governments are the only criteria on which the SL government’s appeal to rejoin the GSP+ is assessed.

It adds that these conventions relate to international human rights, labour rights, environmental standards and good governance.
