The Ministry of Education has decided to suspend grade one admissions to Royal College Colombo for the new academic year.

The grade one admissions were scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 11.

When government schools across the country are admitting students to grade one, the grade one admissions to Royal College have been suspended due to an inquiry that has been launched.

This inquiry has been launched further to complaints received by the Education Ministry in  November, 2016 with regard to alleged irregularities that took place during the selection process of students for grade one..

This is the first time that grade one admissions to any school in the country has temporarily been suspended.

It should be especially noted that this suspension has taken place in one of Sri Lanka’s premier boys’ schools.

The decision by the Education Ministry to ensure that only those who are qualified be admitted to Royal College, should be commended.

It is the duty of the Education Ministry to ensure that irregularities do not take place in the admission of students to grade one in popular schools in Colombo, and other major cities of the country.

The Ministry of Education should also take steps to close the door on such misdeeds from taking place even in the eleventh hour.
