A gazette has been issued making it mandatory for fare-meters to be installed in passenger three-wheelers.The gazette issued bears the signature of Minister of Transport Nimal Siripala De Silva.
When inquiries were made, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport Nihal Somaweera said that the gazette will see that measures are taken enforce several other regulations to ensure the safety of passengers traveling in three-wheelers.
The gazette also reads of regulations imposed on the use of sound equipment that inconvenience the passengers in three-wheelers as well sounds that inconveniences those around the three-wheeler.
The gazette makes it mandatory to display the registration number, name of driver, driver’s license number , a photograph of the driver, an emergency contact and the local police station number at the back of the drivers seat.
The gazette also includes regulations on driver discipline.
It adds that a speedometer must be placed in the three-wheeler, while the right side of the three-wheeler must be sealed preventing passengers from entering or exiting.
