Presidential pardon for 19 leaders in 1818 Uva-Wellassa uprising

Nineteen individuals who were charged with treason for leading the 1818 Uva- Wellassa Revolution have been pardoned by President Maithripala Sirisena.

Issuing a release, the President’s Media Unit quotes the President as saying that these nineteen individuals fought on behalf of the freedom of Sri Lanka as patriots.

The 19 individuals include:

Godagedra-Rate Adikaram
Ketakola Mohottale
Kataragama Maha Bethme-Rate Rala
Kataragama Kuda Bethme-Rate Rala
Palangolle Mohottale
Watte-Kale Mohottale
Kalu-gamuwe Mohottale
Udu-Madura Mohottale
Kohu Kumbure Walawwe Rate Rala
Kohu Kumbure Walawwe Mohottale
Bute-we Rate Rala
Bhagini-Gaha-Wela Rate Rala
Maha Badulle Gammane Rate – Rala
Bulupitiye Mohottala
and – Palle – Mal-Hiyya-we Gamithi-Rale

Sir Robert Brownrigg, the then governor of the British rule in Sri Lanka had issued a notification which named and shamed those who took part in 1818 Uva-Wellassa Uprising as traitors.

That notification was made void after President Maithripala Sirisena signed the special decree today.
