The largest active volcano in Japan has erupted, sending a column of smoke and ash more than 11,000 meters into the air, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported on Saturday.

Pictures shows fires burning in several locations on Mount Aso on the island of Kyushu, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency has raised its alert to Level 3, banning people from the mountain and officials in Aso city, about 10km north of the volcano, have set up evacuation centres as a precaution.

Mount Aso previously rumbled into life in September last year.

Japan, which sits on the Pacific “ring of fire”, has scores of active volcanoes. Level 3 alerts have also been issued this year for the Sakurajima and Kuchinoerabujima volcanoes, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
