Journalists questioned the Inspector General of police Pujith Jayasundara, regarding an incident where an army intelligence officer committed suicide by hanging himself after stating that he murdered veteran journalist Lasantha Wickrematunga
The IGP in reply, stated that investigations are being carried out with regard to this new development, and regarding the suicide itself, but that it is hard to arrive at a conclusion because there are a number of points that need to be taken in to consideration
“We have to investigate into why he said something like that”,said the IGP ,who further pointed out that there is a long investigation process and the personal reasons and the official reasons need to be considered.
The IGP also explained that the suicide victim was a retired officer but there are unanswered questions such as why did he made such a statement as a retired officer, who are the people involved in this and who influenced him to make such a statement.
“There is a special process to obtain statements? He did not just make a statement, yet he committed suicide after that. What is the reason for that? What is the duty that a retired officer has? Then was it a personal matter?” said the IGP pointing out that there are various questions of this nature that needs to be answered.
