Demonstrations were held in several parts of the country on Wednesday.
Residents of the Lower Yaanoya area in Horowpathana in Anuradhapura staged a demonstration against the failure to provide compensation for the destruction caused to their houses and property due to the construction of the Yaanoya reservoir.
The attempts made by the demonstrators to enter the District Secretariat, proved file.
The demonstrators then converged opposite the D.S. Sennanayake roundabout and continued the protest by obstructing the road.
They dispersed following a promise made by the Additional District Secretary to arrange a meeting with the responsible authorities before October 21.
The Ampara District Filed Officers Collective engaged in a demonstration for the second day on Wednesday charging that motorcycles that were to be provided for State Development Officers through the 2014 budget, are yet to be handed over.
The group which arrived at the H.M. Weerasinghe Stadium, reached the clock tower in Ampara in a protest march and remained there, causing a disruption to vehicular movement in the town.
A heated situation ensued when the demonstrators entered the Ampara District Secretariat.
The group dispersed after issuing a warning that they would continue the protest if a solution is not provided withing fourteen days.
Volunteer teachers in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts recommenced their protest opposite the Ministry of Education in Isurupaya demanding permanent positions.
Five of the protesters were granted a meeting with the Secretary to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry Secretary promised the group that a cabinet paper containing a proposal to grant them permaeant positions will be tabled by December this year.
The protesters dispersed following the meeting.
