The Kandaketiya and Kiranaketiya areas in Badulla have become the latest areas to be destroyed by wildfires. The fires have claimed thousands of acres of forest land across the centre of the country.

More than 5,000 acres of the country’s forest cover have already been lost to the flames.

A large portion of a pepper plantation was reduced to ashes by a blaze that broke out in the Vasanaagama area in Kandaketiya, Badulla. The fire quickly spread over a three acre area.

Our correspondent notes that the plantation spans a ten-acre area, adding that the fire continues to spread.Meanwhile, a ten acre area in Kiranaaketiya, Vasanaagama, has been reduced to ashes by a forest fire.

Our reporter noted that the fire has consumed a section of the Kiranaketiya reserve and another pepper plantation.Environmentalists accuse cardamom planters of setting fire to forests.

Environmentalists question why the Wildlife Ministry is not taking steps to identify the mafia behind the destruction of over 5,000 acres of forest land.
