Addressing a group of entrepreneurs from China, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that Sri Lanka occupies a significant place in the development of a new market established around the Indian Ocean.

EntrepreneursrRepresenting 30 leading companies in China participated in an entrepreneurs conference which was held in Shenzhen, China.

Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe  said that discussions were held with Chinese government to combine one belt and one road – making the Indian Ocean a hub. The Colombo Port has been developed further, with the South Port being built by the China Merchants in the future, there will be a north port and a west port, he pointed out.

He added that in order to be a logistic hub, plans are made to the Kandy – Hambantota Corridor, which are in a series of interlinked development.

The delegation, including Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, engaged in an inspection tour of the Shekayu Container Yard which is managed by the Shenzhen China Merchant Company.

Ideas were exchanged regarding the management and operation of the Sri Lankan Port and container yard, as well as how expertise could be obtained from China’s only private Free Trade Zone, which is managed by the Shenzhen China Merchant Company, so that Sri Lanka’s Free Trade Zones too can be managed and operated in a similar manner.
