News1st goes beyond “coverage discrepancy” – A tribute to Lakshman Kadirgamar on 11th death anniversay

Today, August 12, marks the eleventh death anniversary of former foreign minister and distinguished diplomat Lakshman Kadirgamar. The Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial Lecture organised by the Lakshman Kadirgamar institute for International elations and Strategic Studies was delivered by the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solburg on Friday evening.

News 1st was not invited to cover the event. When inquiries were made into the matter, we received information that just one private media institution had been given the opportunity to cover the event. However, it was later known that only state media was allowed to cover the said event.

According to the official website of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International relations and Strategic Studies, Mano Tittawella serves as a member of the Board of Management at the Institute and according to the website Mano Tittawella is also the Chairman, EAP Holdings Limited.

Despite this  situation News1st,  decided to bring to you some memories Lakshman Kadirgamar, in honour of this renowned diplomat.

Born on April 12, 1932 Lakshman Kadirgamar spent his childhood in the Jaffna peninsula. The fact that he lived his early in Jaffna and that he hailed from a prominent family, steered his life into politics. Born as a Christian, Lakshman Kadirgamar was nourished by both Hinduism and Buddhism which gave him the qualities of patience and compassion.

As an individual who possessed all qualities of a “gentleman politician”,  Kadirgamar was well versed in world politics, economics, international organisations conflict resolution, and international relations. Widely respected in his role as foreign minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar rendered a yeoman service to our country.

At midnight on August 12, 2005, sixteen years ago, Lakshman Kadirgamar was assassinated while at his residence. Kadirgamar who is considered as one of the most successful foreign ministers in Sri Lanka will always be remembered by his fellow Sri Lankans.
