Thirty-second regular UNHRC session commences in Geneva

The 32nd regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commenced in Geneva on  Monday, June 13.The sessions will conclude on July 1.

Speaking during the opening of the 32nd session, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein stressed on the importance of inclusive and meaningful engagement in Sri Lanka.

Upon an inquiry made by News 1st, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN in Geneva, Ravinatha Ariyasinha said that the formal discussion on Sri Lanka is scheduled to be taken up towards of the end of the sessions on the 29th, when the UN Human Rights High Commissioner presents his update.

The high commissioner’s statement will be based on observations made during his four-day official visit to Sri Lanka in February this year.

When contacted by News 1st, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Minister Mangala Samaraweera is also scheduled to travel to Geneva in time for the High Commissioner’s oral update.

The Ministry’s Spokesperson Maheshini Kolonne said that Minister Samaraweera will address the session.
