Former Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna , Somawansha Amarasinghe has passed away.

He was 73 years old at the time of his demise.

Somawansa Amarasinghe was an individual who stands out in the revolutionary political movement of Sri Lanka.

Together with the founder of the JVP Rohana Wijeyaweera, Somwansa Amarasinghe made many sacrifices on behalf of the party.

During the 1988-89 period when the top leaders of the JVP were being assassinated, Somawansa fled the country in secret and reformed the JVP from overseas.

Somawansa Amarasinghe dedicated his life to help the JVP transition from a revolutionary movement to a mainstream political party and eventually gain parliamentary representation.

In February 2014, he parted way with the JVP, handing the reigns over to Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
