Britain has granted political refugee status to the former president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, according to his lawyer.

However the government of Maldives has demanded that Mr Nasheed return from sick leave in London to serve a 13-year jail term,  though it noted it had yet to receive official confirmation of the refugee deal.

Nasheed, the opposition leader, was controversially jailed for 13 years under anti-terror laws last year and he was allowed to travel to the UK to receive treatment on his spine.

The environmental campaigner and democracy champion was forced from office in 2012 , four years after becoming the country’s first democratically-elected leader.
