The Department of Irrigation says that a programme to gather information on the illegal constructions on either side of the Kelani river, has commenced.

Director General of the Dept. of Irrigation, Saman Weerasinghe stated that the main reason for the flooding of several areas in Colombo is the illegal construction on the banks of the Kelani river.

He added during the past few decades these illegal constructions could not be controlled due to the interference of several authorities, therefore these illegal constructions meed to be removed in order to control the overflowing of the river.

Several areas including Seethawaka Kaduwela and the Kollonawa provincial secretariat were inundated as a result of the overflowing of the Kelani river.
