The Department of Meteorology says the rains that have persisted for two days are expected to gradually deteriorate in certain parts of the island.

However, the department adds that the rain will continue for a few more days, accompanied by strong winds.

The lowest rainfall as of 8.30 a.m. on May 16 was recorded from Katunayake at 260.2mm.

Colombo received a rainfall of 232.4mm, Ratmalana 170.8mm while Ratnapura received a rainfall of 131.1mm.

The death of an infant was reported from the Amarakotuwa area in Wattala, as a result of heavy showers. The 10-month-old died after falling off his bed and drowning in the water that had flooded inside the house.

Meanwhile, reports have emerged that three fishermen have gone missing after a fishing vessel capsized in the Mowarala sea in Negombo. A Sri Lanka Navy vessel has been dispatched to rescue the fishermen.

One person was also killed in Ratnapura when an earth embankment collapsed onto a house in the Madagammana village in Eheliyagoda. The Eheliyagoda Police has been dispatched to the location.
