The National Building Research Organisation has issued landslide warnings for the Badulla and Moneragala districts owing to inclement weather conditions.
The Department of Irrigation says that the spillgates of the Deduru-oya and Weheragala Reservoirs have been opened due to incessant rains.
The highest rainfall was recorded in the Pottuvil area in the past 24 hours. Rainfall of 145.8 mm was recorded in the area.
The Met Department reports that Colombo recorded 74.4 mm of rain and Trincomalee recorded 90.2mm of rain on Sunday. The Disaster Management Centre says the reason for heavy rains being experienced across many areas of the country is a low pressure zone.
Speaking to News1st Assistant Director of the DMC, Pradeep Kodippili said people from many areas, including Colombo, have been affected,
The Assistant Director of the DMC also reiterated the Met Department warning issued for the naval and fishing communities to be vigilant as a sudden roughness of the sea areas is to be expected. The Met Department this morning said that the atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka has intensified into a low pressure area and has established in the Southeast of Sri lanka.
It is likely to intensify further and gradually develop in to a depression and may move closer to Sri Lanka, affecting the weather over the country and surrounding sea areas.
The department forecasts that cloudy skies, very heavy rainfalls of around 150 mm, lightning and windy conditions are likely to continue over country and surrounding sea areas.
