Complications arise over arrest of Ex-LTTE cadre Nagulan

The Terrorist Investigation Division has arrested an ex-LTTE cadre named Nagulan alias Ganapathipillai Sivamoorthy.

However, according to the official website of the Ministry of Defence Colonel Nagulan alias Ganapathipillai Sivamoorthy. the leader of the LTTE’s “Charles Anthony” band was killed in a military attack in 2007. Is Nagulan who was arrested today, the Ex-LTTE member who was reported to have been killed?

Now, this question was posed to the Cabinet Spokesperson at today’s media briefing.

Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that there is nothing they could do since the individuals are rehabilitated. He added that following rehabilitation, any citizen can be detained over suspicion for any allegation. Therefore, certain issues had come up over the discovery of weapons and investigations which were launched.

As questions were raised that according to the military website the individual had died several years ago Millitary spokesperson, Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera stated that they cannot confirm that it is this specific individual as there are several people under the name of Nagulan.

Explaining further, he added that it is impossible to make a statement without confirming the identity.

This LTTE identification released on January 1m 2007 notes that the image is of one, Sinnathambi Kanapathipille Shivamoorthy. According to the website of the Ministry of Defence, the individual known as Nagula had died in 2007, however there are certain similarities between the photograph of Nagulan arrested yesterday and the photograph in the identity card.

Today, News 1st visited the house house of the Ex-LTTE cadre, Nagulan. According to his mother, Kanapathipille Shivamoorthy was rehabilitated and re-integrated into society in 2013.

Nagulan’s mother stated that he was born in 1975 and joined the LTTE when was 14 years old. She added that they never saw him after he joined the Charles Anthony band of the LTTE.

Explaining further, she noted that their son was taken away to Jaffna, when he was farming along with the father and thereafter they had held him in a room and had asked the father to go back. The mother also added that they do not know where he is as he was rehabilitated from 2009 to 2013.

According to the information we gathered, after being re-integrated to society Nagulan had tied the knot and is the father of a two-year-old.

His mother shared a memory with us.

She stated that in 2012 the Intelligence Service brought to Batticaloa and held him in a room. Thereafter, when went to speak to him at night they had arrived and recorded what was spoken.

In addition, she added that after the statements were recorded, their signatures were taken and was told that he will be released . Later after he was married, he trained for three years and entered the teaching profession five days ago.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that Nagulan who was arrested yesterday had served as the Second officer to Ex-LTTE head Ram, who was arrested recently. He however said that he cannot disclose the reasons for Nagulan’s arrest.

On March 30, a suicide vest and explosives were discovered from a house in Chavakachcheri, Jaffna. Following the discovery, three Ex-LTTE cadres have been arrested by police.

Meanwhile the Former LTTE Chief of Intelligence for Trincomalee ,Kalai Arasan alias Arivalahan was arrested yesterday (April 26th).

Kalei Arasan too was arrested in connection with the cache of explosives discovered in Chavakachcheri.

Another person purportedly connected to the incident was arrested in Mannar today.

The suspect arrested in Mannar, operates a printing press.
