United National Party’s working committee decided on Monday, February 8, to appoint Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as a national list MP. The committee made the decision during the working committee meeting held at Sirikotha, the UNP Party Headquarters.
The national list position given to Field Marshal Fonseka was left vacant, following the passing of late minister M.K.A.D.S Gunawardena.
According to the Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella, Field Marsah Sarath Fonseka is scheduled to take oaths in Parliament on Tuesday February 9.
As stated by Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake, Field Marshal Fonseka may be granted a ministerial position, in addition to the national list position.
When News 1st contacted Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to make inquiries regarding the given position, and whether his title as Field Marshal would be an obstacle to him serving in parliament, Field Marshal Fonseka stated that it would not: as only a five star general is called a Field Marshal, and that they are able to engage in politics.
He further noted that field marshals are not persons who are under the law of the Army Act and they do not hold responsibility within the army.
