Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake responded to claims that the arrest of Yoshitha Rajapaksa, was an act of political revenge.
MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake noted that what’s funny is that Rajapaksa and his accomplices are interpreting this situation as political revenge – and Sripathi Sooriyarachchi was arrested and remanded.
He added that if this was political revenge – not even two weeks after the presidential election, the army stormed into Sarath Fonseka’s office and took him away in front of a large crowd.
“That is what you call political revenge Mr. Rajapaksa,” charged MP Dissanayake and noted that Wimal Weerawansa sat in the judge bench to impeach the Chief Justice of the country and that is political revenge.
He added that what this government is actually doing is, instead of taking political revenge, they are resorting to measures to protect the corrupt and the fraudsters.
He also added that Shiranthi Rajapaksa has not appeared before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division to provide a statement because Mahinda Rajapaksa called Ranil Wickremesinghe and they came to an agreement that officers of the FCID will go to wherever Shiranthi Rajapaksa is, to record a statement.
He also stated that several files were sent to the Attorney General’s Department and the Attorney General’s Department has come to conclusions on only four matters. But over 30 such files remain stagnant on the desk at the AG’s Department.
With regard to the controversy surrounding the Carlton Pre-school MP Dissanayake noted that the Carlton Pre-school belongs to Shiranthi Rajapaksa and the Carlton House in Tangalle belongs to Mahinda Rajapaksa while the Carlton Rugby tournament is Namal’s tournament.
“So do you expect us to believe that Carlton Sports Network belongs to someone else? Do you believe that it belongs to someone else?” questioned the MP and noted that Carlton is the brand name of the Rajapaksas.
He also questioned as to where a sum of Rs.234 million that was spent as startup capital to launch this channel came from.
The leader of the JVP charged that this was the money which was either from the treasury or money which was supposed to go into the treasury and therefore state money has been misused for the Carlton Sports Network. And there is no bail if a sum of more than Rs.25,000 of state money has been misused and the charges are clear.
“If public property has been utilised for fraud or has been misappropriated, then I assure you that the JVP will not let go of the fight to regain all of what has been taken,” said MP Dissanayake
